‘To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable
foe, to strive when your arms are too weary, to reach the unreachable star…
this is my quest…’
‘Each generation contributes something unique to an organisation, and builds
on the foundations of the past….
Thirty years is indeed a short period in the life of an organisation.
However, owing to the genius of my father, Maj PK Mehra, and his outstanding
horsemanship and choice of Razeen as a sire, history has been created by
Usha, taking Indian breeding to unprecedented heights.
My quest as the new generation breeder-owner is to take the next step by
taking Usha into the international arena, to breed and sell thoroughbreds to
win group races Internationally.
I have a dream…. in 1991 when I joined my father, he asked me why I wanted
to join, and what was my mission. I remember vividly telling him that there
was nothing more I could do which he had not already accomplished in India.
He had already bred 5 Indian Derby winners in a row, and every conquered the
Indian turf, second to none. The idea of breeding an International horse in
those days was like a dream… no one believed we could do it. When I told him
my dream, he was amused and smiled, try… lets see, if you can…. I have done
all that I could to create a solid base, and if this is what you want to do,
then we better buy a top class Stallion. He went abroad and purchased Razeen
and a year later Steinbeck
I was sent to the Irish National Stud for training, and then on to Kentucky
for work in equine nutrition. On returning, my true apprenticeship began
under my father. He used to tell me ‘I am your Guru, your Father and your
Boss. I know this will be as difficult for you, as it is for me to wear all
three hats at the same time.’
On January 2nd 2001, I lost my parents and sister, Radhika, in a helicopter
crash, and life was never the same again. I took over the reins of Usha and
quietly set to work on realising my dream…
As a first step towards this end, I bought the well performed son of Red
Ransom, CHINA VISIT, and also started the International Stud Farm, specially
created for the upbringing of the younger stock, with state-of-the-art
facilities in paddocks, barns etc.
This year China Visits first crop is in training with 3 each from the
lot in training in Dubai (Satish Seemar) and Singapore (Michael Clements) to
go with the ones in India. In the current racing season, 2 daughters of the
mighty Razeen, Desert Lightning & Romantic Liaison won
and placed in the Indian 1000 Guineas Gr.1 & Indian Oaks Gr.1.
My team and I would like to thank all the owners, trainers, jockeys and the
racing fraternity, who have solidly stood by the Usha Stud Farm.
We look forward to serving you even better in coming years… |
