FORMAL INVITATION (Steinbeck – Invitation Only)
STRIKES GOLD

The Maharaja’s Gold Cup, a terms event for horses rated in the highest class, run over 1,600 meters, has long been one of the highlights of the Mysore racing season. Instituted in 1969, the race has been won by some very good horses and has always attracted a competitive field.
This year was no different, with seven horses vying for the top spot. The only three year old in the field, Rising Force, was attempting to beat his older opponents in what was, for him, essentially a prep race for the Deccan Derby in early October.……
At the turn for home, Formal Invitation challenged Rising Force and the two fought it down the straight, until the final 100 meters, when Formal Invitation began to stretch away. In the end, the Kolkata challenger was a comfortable winner, while Rising Force just about managed to keep second place from a fast closing Lancaster.

FLASHING STAR (Razeen – Allinda)
LANDS 2000 GUINEAS AT MYSORE

The decision to keep Flashing Star in training after the Bangalore Summer season produced the right result for Dr.M A M Ramaswamy’s stable. The Kingfisher Derby and Colts Trial Stakes runner up broke-up a three in a row sequence of second place, finishing with a pretty comprehensive victory in the Mysore 2000 Guineas over some of his highly regarded contemporaries…..
B Prakash has Flashing Star, who is saddled in Mysore by Robert Foley, settled in fourth on the outside of the leaders Arturo and Aspinalls. Green Bax raced along the rails just in front of the favorite, with the rest of the field behind. At the bend, Prakash brought Flashing Star smoothly into contention even as Aspinalls began to flounder. Arturo still had the lead, but once Flashing Star had got into top gear, there was nothing the former could do to hold him off. Flashing Star then stretched away to record a fluent win from Hesperus, who covered a lot of ground in the straight to finish a good second. Arturo stayed on take third.

DA VINCI ROSE (Steinbeck – Indian Melody)
SAVOURS SWEET SUCCESS….

Winner of two graded races races at Malakpet, Leo D’Silva’s Da Vinci Rose was a fair sixth to Glorious Breaker in the Bangalore Fillies Trial. What more, she was even secretly fancied against Finest Moment in the Juvenile Million here last season. What went against her was, her ability to tackle a mile was not sufficiently underlined. In the vent Scintillating Skill was lodged favorite….
The professional competence of trainer LeoD’Silva is common knowledge now. Although he had quite a few horses of repute to his credit, the one who elevated him to his current status is Cola Gables, the highest rated horse in the country at present. And he proved that it was not out of sync at all when Da Vinci Rose won with effortless ease although losers blamed it on soft going. Known to get the top gear quite quickly,
Da Vinci Rose, however, was driven in a lower gear by Suraj Narredu for two thirds of the race. And when he did switch gears at the top of the straight, she simply thundered on, reducing Scintillating Skill to a pathetic straggler. While Confluence was another three lengths behind, it’s less said the better about the rest.

SOUTHERN REGENT
REIGNS SUPREME WITH AN OVERWHELMING..

Call it reversal of form or give credit to the neutralizing effect of scales,
Southern Regent (Razeen – Allinda) and B Prakash bounced back in style in less than three weeks to pull off an overwhelming win in the President Of India Gold Cup at Malakpet.
With Khushroo Dhunjiboy reinforcing his challenge with Venus Arising and Petronius Maximus in a field that already had another live contender in Aperitivo, the Gr.1 race had it all the trappings of a big fight. But true to saying ‘ When going gets tough, the tough get going’, Southern Regent showed his big heart on the big occasion with a characteristic run that left the field in his wake.
Southern Regent took little time to establish his hold on the race. Coming up just after taking the final turn, he went clear at 400 meters and won by a widening margin of 2 1/2
Lengths from Aperitivo. Adolfito retained his third spot.

SOTHERN REGENT (Razeen – Allinda) WINS A THRILLER

The Maharaja’s Cup, run over 2,200 meters used to be the highlight of the Bangalore Summer season before the introduction of the Bangalore Derby. Though slightly diminished in nature today, it remains a highly competitive contest, which more often than not attracts the top 4 yr olds and the other leading older horses in the country.
……
Adolfito set a scorching pace from the start and Prakash settled Southern Regent towards the rear of the field with Andreyan for company.Prakash gradually improved to be within striking distance of the lead at the turn for home, all the while being shadowed by the C. Alford ridden Andreyan. Southern Regent swept past Adolfito with
300 meters to run and was joined on the outside by Andreyan. What followed next brought the crowd on their feet; as the two horses fought out, stride for stride. Andreyan seemed to hold the advantage for a stride or two but Southern Regent, the glint of battle in his eye, clawed his way back and poked his nose in front…. For now Dr. M.A.M Ramaswamy and his team can savor the sweet taste of victory brought to them by a brave horse that refused to be beaten.

ANDREYAN (Razeen – Vision of India)
TURNS THE TABLES IN THE
Gr.2 BANGALORE ST. LEGER

Andreyan had been unable to make a four kilo advantage count in the 2200metre Maharaja’s Cup Gr.2 a fortnight earlier and had gone down narrowly to Southern Regent……….
Christopher Alford, who had ridden Andreyan well off the pace, had cruised six wide into the straight on tight reins. The Kolkata based rider waited until he was well into the straight before asking Andreyan for an effort, which was answered instantly. Andreyan went past Southern Regent in a matter of strides and lengthened away to the winning post without Alford riding him out completely or using the whip even once.
Southern Regent was not disgraced in defeat and he was beaten by the better horse on the day. Andreyan, Southern Regent and Aperitivo likely to meet up again in the President of India Gold Cup in Hyderabad and that race is setting up as a mouth watering event not to be missed.

FLASHING STAR
shines bright in the Poonawalla Derby Gr.1

Dr. M A M Ramaswamy’s Flashing Star (Razeen – Altitude) promised much after he had set the Western India last year with emphatic victories in the Breeder’s Produce Stakes Gr.2 and the Shapoorji Breeders’ Juvenile Colts Championship Gr.3………

Rested after he was well beaten in the Harvins 2000 Guineas Gr.2, Flashing Star appeared for this race looking fit and well.
No hope Royal Panache led the field briefly from the gates before giving way to Aspinalls. The Padmanabhan trained Powerthrust raced in third while Flashing Star settled in mid bunch, with Refreshing in close attendance. Prakash moved Flashing Star closer to the lead, with about 600m to run, and by the time they turned for home, he was in striking distance of Powerthrust who led them into the straight. Showing his old turn of foot, Flashing Star sprinted away from the field the moment he was asked for his effort, to have the race won a long way from the winning post. Refreshing put in a brave run from behind to snatch second place from Powerthrust, with Aspinalls well beaten into fourth.
With this win, Flashing Star has redeemed himself, and a lot of the credit should go to his trainer, S Ganapathy, who brought him back to his best when it mattered most. Flashing Star will now have five weeks to get ready for the biggest test of his life, the Indian Turf Invitation Cup. On his Derby showing, he will be one of the fancied runners, and he adds another string to his owner’s bow for this prestigious event.
