Speaking Of Which [IRE]
23 yearlings comprise the first crop of Speaking Of Which [IRE]. He's stamped his stock and they are rangy, highly athletic types with an extended stride and exceptional temperaments.

Speaking Of Which [IRE] - Racing Career Highlights: He broke his maiden by an impressive two and a quarter lengths over 8.5F at Cork, Ireland for trainer Dermot Weld and Moyglare Stud farm. Next up, he was in a league of his own, when romping home a 9L winner of the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes Gr.3 over 10F. This win saw his rating jump to 116. Video - attheraces.com

The Irish Derby Gr.1 had to be missed by Speaking Of Which, due to the extremely testing ground caused by the infamous Irish weather. He had only one further outing in his native Ireland. He ran a respectable length and a quarter third in the KPMG Enterprise Stakes Gr.3 at Leopardstown, running after a long gap of over three months.

The firm turf in America beckoned. Speaking Of Which ran a half length second on his debut run in the U.S.A at Santa Anita in the Twilight Derby Gr.2. over 9 furlongs. There was no shame in this narrow defeat, as the winner Grandeur went on to run a close second in the Hollywood Derby Gr.1 and a close third in the Man O' War Stakes Gr.1 (both on turf ).

The combination of trainer Christophe Clement and jockey Joe Bravo contributed to Speaking Of Which's best performances in the U.S. He won the Tropical Turf Handicap Gr.3 over 9 furlongs and his piece de resistance was a length and a half victory in the Monmouth Stakes Gr.2 again over 9 furlongs on firm turf (given our Indian track conditions - firmer than firm! - this is a huge plus). The second horse home on this occasion (beaten a length and a half by Speaking Of Which) was Hangover Kid who had placed in the United Nations Stakes Gr.1 on his second outing and subsequently won the Bowling Green Handicap Gr.2 to earn a place at stud in the U.S.A.

It is relevant to appreciate here the performances in Europe of American turf horses like Tepin (winner of the Queen Anne Stakes Gr.1 at Royal Ascot last year), Lady Aurelia (winner of last year's Prix Morny Gr.1 at Deauville and the Queen Mary Stakes Gr.2 at Royal Ascot), No Nay Never (winner of the Norfolk Stakes Gr.2 at Royal Ascot, the Prix Morny Gr.1 at Deauville, half length runner up of the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Gr.1 at Santa Anita and now at stud at Coolmore Ireland). For a nation who's preferred racing surface is dirt, it is amazing that 60% of the graded races in America are on turf!

Cloth Of Stars (Sea The Stars ex Strawberry Fledge) bred on the same Green Desert / Mr. Prospector nick as Speaking Of Which) won the first European group one race of the season - the Prix Ganay Gr.1 at Saint Cloud on May day. A perfect cue to release the second part of our introductory series on Speaking Of Which's first crop of yearlings ! The following paras highlight the special aspects of

Speaking Of Which's pedigree:

Speaking Of Which is line bred 4Sx5D to the 2000 Guineas Gr.1, Epsom Derby Gr.1 winner and Irish Derby Gr.1 & Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe Gr.1 second - Sir Ivor (1967 Champion 2 year old in Ireland, 1968 Horse of the Year in Europe, 1983 Leading Broodmare Sire in England & Ireland and prominent sire).

Raise A Native (Joint Champion Juvenile 1961, 1973 Leading American Juvenile Sire, important sire and sire of sires) is also duplicated 3Dx5D in Speaking Of Which's pedigree.

Sire line:

His sire Invincible Spirit is a prepotent global sire of sires with 15 sons at stud. He is the grand sire of 7 individual group 1 winners.

Lawman [FR] (Invincible Spirit ex Laramie) is presently Invincible Spirit's most successful son at stud in the northern hemisphere and is the sire of 5 group 1 winners and 40 stakes performers. Lawman is bred on the same Invincible Spirit / Mr. Prospector nick as Speaking Of Which.

It is very pertinent that Lawman's pedigree has a "parallel pattern". This is a term coined by the Bible of American Racing & Breeding - Bloodhorse. The Sir Gaylord / Never Bend cross is duplicated in the top and bottom halves of Lawman's pedigree. This cross exists in Invincible Spirit's pedigree. Lawman's breeders chose to mate the mare Laramie (USA) - the dam of Lawman - with Invincible Spirit, because it exists in her pedigree too. Thereby, in Lawman's pedigree they have duplicated the cross or created the parallel pattern . A similar "parallel pattern" exists in the pedigrees of Speaking Of Which's progeny from Multidimensional mares - where the Sharpen Up / Doubly Sure cross (through the brothers Kris & Diesis) is duplicated. A similar "parallel pattern", is also present in the pedigrees of Multidimensional's progeny from Razeen mares. This nick has produced 13 classic winners from 4 classic crops till date !

I Am Invincible [AUS], is Invincible Spirit's best son at stud to date in the southern hemisphere. He was champion first season sire in 2013-14 and has achieved the rare feat of having risen to be 2nd in the Australian General Sires rankings, in the short period of time since then.

Other prominent sons of Invincible Spirit at stud include the four time group 1 winner (including the Irish 2000 Guineas Gr.1) - Kingman [GB] (Invincible Spirit ex Zenda)- at Juddmonte Farms Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket. Again, like Speaking Of Which, Kingman is bred on the Invincible Spirit / Mr. Prospector nick and has his first crop of yearlings on the ground in 2017. Kingman's pedigree too has a "parallel pattern"! The Northern Dancer / Never Bend cross is duplicated in the top and bottom halves of his pedigree.

Also with first yearlings in 2017 is Charm Spirit [IRE] (Invincible Spirit ex L'Enjoleuse) - the three time group 1 winner standing at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire, UK. The July Cup Gr.1 winning Mayson [GB] (Invincible Spirit ex Mayleaf) stands at the reputed Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket and has his first 3 year olds in 2017.

Shalaa [IRE] (Invincible Spirit ex Ghurra), winner of the Prix Morny Gr.1 and the Middle Park Stakes Gr.1 entered stud in 2017 at the high profile Haras de Bouqetot in France. Importantly, the "parallel pattern" referred to earlier exists in Shalaa's pedigree too. In fact it is the same Sharpen Up / Doubly Sure cross (through the brothers Kris & Diesis) that is duplicated. This is exactly as in the progeny of Speaking Of Which from Multidimensional mares. Their pedigrees have another similarity too, in that they are line bred to Danzig (leading American freshman & juvenile sire 1984, leading American sire 1991-1993 and head of an increasingly important branch of the Northern Dancer male line). If these yearlings were entered in the European yearling sales, they would evoke great interest !

The good looking Territories [IRE] (Invincible Spirit ex Taranto) - Prix Jean Prat Gr.1 winner and 2000 Guineas Gr.1 and Prix Jean - Luc Lagadere Gr.1 runner up, has covered his first book of mares at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. Territories too is bred on the same Invincible Spirit / Mr. Prospector nick as Speaking Of Which.

Also bred on this nick, is Born To Sea [IRE] - the dual group 1 placed (including 2nd in the Irish Derby Gr.1) - Invincible Spirit half brother to Galileo and Sea The Stars, who stands at the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud in Ireland and has his first three year olds in 2017. He already has the group winner Sea Of Grace from his first two year old crop.

Brazen Beau [AUS] (I Am Invincible ex Sansadee) - the dual group one winner and triple group one second - grandson of Invincible Spirit - has his first foals in 2017 and shuttles between Darley's Northwood Park base in Victoria, Australia and their Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. He is mentioned here (although he's a grandson of Invincible Spirit), due to the fact that yet again a "parallel pattern" exists in his pedigree (Danzig cross with a Bletchingly / Bletchingly line mare is duplicated) as referred to in the aforementioned top class racehorses and stallions.

Invincible Spirit himself stands at the Irish National Stud for a covering fee of 120,000 Euros and was eighth on the GB & IRE sire rankings in 2016, by stakes earned. He was ranked fourth by wins and winners in 2015 and was fifth by stakes earned in the same year.

Dam line: Speaking Of Which's dam Suitably Discreet [USA] is an unraced daughter of Mr. Prospector (Speaking Of Which's broodmare sire), who was leading American broodmare sire nine times. He was leading American Freshman sire in 1978 and led the American General Sire Rankings in 1987 & 1988.

Suitably Discreet's dam (Speaking Of Which's maternal grand dam) is Alywow [CAN] - Champion 3yr old filly in Canada in 1994. She produced four group horses including Century City by Danzig. Century City ran second in the Irish 2000 Guineas Gr.1and third in the Breeders' Cup Mile Gr.1.

Nick with Multidimensional mares :

As mentioned above, Speaking Of Which nicks with Multidimensional mares, on a similar pattern to the sensational Multidimensional nick with Razeen mares (that has produced 13 classic winners from just four classic crops till date). The progeny of Speaking Of Which's matings with Multidimensional mares have a parallel pattern, since the cross between the highly successful progenitor - Sharpen Up (leading British based sire in 1979) and the noted broodmare Doubly Sure is duplicated (appears in the top and bottom half of the pedigrees) through the full brothers Diesis and Kris . The importance and relevance of such parallel patterns has already been highlighted by providing examples of top international racehorses and stallions.

Nick with Razeen mares:

Razeen mares covered by Speaking Of Which, produce foals line bred 5x3 to the breed shaper - Northern Dancer.

Nick with China Visit mares:

Foals born to China Visit mares covered by Speaking Of Which, are bred on the same Invincible Spirit - Red Ransom cross, as Ivawood - the dual Classic placed new entrant to Coolmore Studs' stallion ranks.

Nick with Steinbeck mares:

The progeny of Steinbeck mares mated with Speaking Of Which, are line bred 3x3 to the stallion colossus - Mr. Prospector.
